DEMO 1: Testing new seating positions for highly automated vehicles, focusing on highway Safety-Critical scenarios

Demo 1 aims to advance the occupant protection system and reduce the risk of severe occupant injuries in new seating positions by implementing an occupant monitoring system and an adaptive restraint system. The occupant monitoring system, which consists of cameras (see image below) will be installed in a VW Golf provided by THI. The vehicle will showcase how the occupant monitoring system detects occupant positions, postures and belt usages. The restraint system (i.e., seat belts, airbags) will be adapted according to the information provided by the occupant monitoring system.

The full system functionality will be evaluated virtually using both female and male human body models (HBMs) in new seating positions. In addition to the HBM simulations, a few seated positions will be demonstrated by a sled test at IDIADA's facilities using an anthropomorphic test device (ATD).
