#H2020RTR21: showcase of SAFE-UP’s achievements to date

SAFE-UP was invited to present its objectives, results, and impact at this year’s H2020RTR21 Conference, which took place in Brussels this week.

Our Project Coordinator Núria Parera from Applus+IDIADA delivered a short yet informative presentation on Tuesday 29th of March during the 'Automated driving and the users’ session.

Núria took the opportunity to showcase some of the project’s highlights so far, like our recently published infographics on the most common crash scenarios between cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Our panel session at last year’s ITS World Congress with the head of the Road Safety Unit at DG-MOVE (European Commission) Claire Depré was also given a mention. Read a recap of the session ‘A comprehensive look into proactive safety: solutions for a highly automated and mixed traffic environment’ here.

She also highlighted our first Knowledge transfer webinar with fellow H2020 projects OSCCAR and HEADSTART that took place in November 2020. The ultimate goal of these webinars is to facilitate synergies between SAFE-UP and other related innovation projects, identifying State-of-the-Art results to build upon, as well as raising awareness of available tools and databases for partners. Read more about the webinar here.

As well as these key events, the expected impact of the SAFE-UP project was revealed to the audience:

SAFE-UP’s 4 demonstrators are set to collectively prevent 2.5 - 4.15% of road transport fatalities and 5.9 - 9.9% of serious injuries by 2025.

These figures are proportional to the market deployment and adoption of our solutions, preventing up to 32.6% of road transport fatalities and 69.3% of serious injuries by 2050.

SAFE-UP will also:

  • Generate €7.15M turnover

  • Anchor 2,915 jobs by 2025

  • Reach more than 12.5M road users by 2030

  • Engage with over 50 relevant training associations

  • Save between €429.4 - 717.2 million in hospitalisation costs

  • Develop procedures-related assessment areas of Euro NCAP

65 fellow H2020 projects also presented their new discoveries and achievements, how they tackled hurdles and resolved challenges, and the next research steps in different important areas for road transport: Green Vehicles, Urban Mobility, Logistics, Intelligent Transport Systems, Safety, and of course, Automated Road Transport. The event delivered a holistic view of how the European research scene is moving forward in these fields, bringing benefits to the environment, economy, and European society overall.

We were glad to finally have this face-to-face opportunity to get to know our fellow research projects much better, as well as the minds behind them.

The fifth European conference on results from road transport R&I in H2020 projects (H2020RTR21Conference) was organised by the European Commission together with the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC), the European Green Vehicles Initiative Association for the 2Zero partnership (EGVIAfor2Zero) and the Connected, Cooperation and Automated Mobility Association (CCAM).
